2019-09-11Reset dbus registered buses on dump loadPaul Eggert1-4/+8
Problem reported by Leonard Lausen (Bug#37331). * src/dbusbind.c: Include pdumper.h. (syms_of_dbusbind_for_pdumper): New function, to reset the registered buses. (syms_of_dbusbind): Use it, fixing a TODO.
2019-09-04Tweak xd_append_arg to pacify -Wnull-dereferencePaul Eggert1-16/+21
* src/dbusbind.c (xd_append_arg): Redo to pacify gcc -Wnull-dereference. Also, check that the Lisp string won’t overrun the C signature buffer.
2019-07-07Remove printmax_t etc.Paul Eggert1-10/+8
printmax_t etc. were needed only for platforms that lacked support for printing intmax_t. These platforms are now so obsolete that they are no longer practical porting targets. * src/image.c (gs_load): Fix unlikely buffer overrun discovered while making these changes. It was introduced in 2011-07-17T00:34:43!eggert@cs.ucla.edu. * src/lisp.h (printmax_t, uprintmax_t, pMd, pMu, pMx): Remove. All uses replaced by their standard counterparts intmax_t, uintmax_t, PRIdMAX, PRIuMAX, PRIxMAX.
2019-05-30Simplify xd_signature to pacify GCC 9Paul Eggert1-5/+3
* src/dbusbind.c (xd_signature): Use simpler way to set up the subsignature. This also pacifies GCC 9 on Fedora 30 x86-64. Backport from master.

2018-08-27Improve bignum support for system typesPaul Eggert1-16/+28
Use bignums when Emacs converts to and from system types like off_t for file sizes whose values can exceed fixnum range. Formerly, Emacs sometimes generted floats and sometimes ad-hoc conses of integers. Emacs still accepts floats and conses for these system types, in case some stray Lisp code is generating them, though this usage is obsolescent. * doc/lispref/files.texi (File Attributes): * doc/lispref/hash.texi (Defining Hash): * doc/lispref/nonascii.texi (Character Sets): * doc/lispref/os.texi (User Identification): * doc/lispref/processes.texi (System Processes): * etc/NEWS: Document changes. * src/bignum.c (mpz_set_uintmax, make_biguint) (mpz_set_uintmax_slow, bignum_to_intmax, bignum_to_uintmax): New functions. 2018-06-10Use native alignment to access Lisp object dataPaul Eggert1-8/+10
Instead of using __builtin_assume_aligned (P, GCALIGNMENT) to tell GCC that P has alignment 8, use (T *) P where T is the type of the pointed-to object, to tell GCC that P has native alignment. This is simpler, matches the intent better, and should help simplify future improvements. Some of these changes are to pacify gcc -Wnull-dereference, since GCC is smarter about pointers now that Emacs no longer uses __builtin_assume_aligned; these minor changes should improve code efficiency slightly. On Fedora 28 x86-64 with default optimization this patch shrinks the size of the Emacs text segment by 0.36%. * src/conf_post.h (__has_builtin, __builtin_assume_aligned): Remove; no longer used. * src/dbusbind.c (XD_OBJECT_TO_DBUS_TYPE): Pacify -Wnull-dereference by using XCAR instead of CAR_SAFE and XCDR instead of CDR_SAFE when this is safe. * src/fileio.c (Fexpand_file_name): * src/font.c (clear_font_cache): Pacify -Wnull-dereference by removing unnecessary NILP test. * src/keyboard.c (xevent_start): New function. 2017-10-04Speed up (format "%s" STRING) and the likePaul Eggert1-2/+1
Although the Lisp manual said that ‘format’ returns a newly-allocated string, this was not true for a few cases like (format "%s" ""), and fixing the documentation to allow reuse of arguments lets us improve performance in common cases like (format "foo") and (format "%s" "foo") (Bug#28625). * doc/lispref/strings.texi (Formatting Strings): * etc/NEWS: Say that the result of ‘format’ might not be newly allocated. * src/callint.c (Fcall_interactively): * src/dbusbind.c (XD_OBJECT_TO_STRING): * src/editfns.c (Fmessage, Fmessage_box): * src/xdisp.c (vadd_to_log, Ftrace_to_stderr): Just use Fformat or Fformat_message, as that’s simpler and no longer makes unnecessary copies. * src/editfns.c (styled_format): Remove last argument, as it is no longer needed: all callers now want it to behave as if it were true. All remaining callers changed. Make this function static again. Simplify the function now that we no longer need to worry about whether the optimization is allowed.
2017-09-26Avoid some unnecessary copying in Fformat etc.Paul Eggert1-1/+2

2017-09-13Prefer HTTPS to FTP and HTTP in documentationPaul Eggert1-1/+1
Most of this change is to boilerplate commentary such as license URLs. This change was prompted by ftp://ftp.gnu.org's going-away party, planned for November. Change these FTP URLs to https://ftp.gnu.org instead. Make similar changes for URLs to other organizations moving away from FTP. Also, change HTTP to HTTPS for URLs to gnu.org and fsf.org when this works, as this will further help defend against man-in-the-middle attacks (for this part I omitted the MS-DOS and MS-Windows sources and the test tarballs to keep the workload down). HTTPS is not fully working to lists.gnu.org so I left those URLs alone for now.

2016-09-30Limit <config.h>’s includesPaul Eggert1-0/+1
This follows up on recent problems with the fact that config.h includes stdlib.h etc.; some files need to include stdlib.h later. config.h generally should limit itself to includes that are universally safe; outside of MS-Windows, only stdbool.h makes the cut among the files currently included. So, move the other includes to just the files that need them (Bug#24506). * configure.ac (config_opsysfile): Remove, as this generic hook is no longer needed. * lib-src/etags.c, src/unexmacosx.c, src/w32.c, src/w32notify.c: * src/w32proc.c (_GNU_SOURCE): Remove, as it’s OK for config.h to do this now. * src/conf_post.h: Include <ms-w32.h>, instead of the generic config_opsysfile, for simplicity as this old way of configuring is now done only for the MS-Windows port. Do not include <ms-w32.h> if DEFER_MS_W32_H, for the benefit of the few files that want its effects later. Do not include <alloca.h>, <string.h>, or <stdlib.h>. Other files modified to include these headers as needed, or to not include headers that are no longer needed. * src/lisp.h: Include <alloca.h> and <string.h> here, since some of the inline functions need them. * src/regex.c: Include <alloca.h> if not emacs. (If emacs, we can rely on SAFE_ALLOCA.) There is no longer any need to worry about HAVE_ALLOCA_H. * src/unexmacosx.c: Rely on config.h not including stdlib.h. * src/w32.c, src/w32notify.c, src/w32proc.c (DEFER_MS_W32_H): Define before including <config.h> first, and include <ms-w32.h> after the troublesome headers.

2015-09-16Omit unnecessary \ before paren in C docstringsPaul Eggert1-5/+5
Although \( is needed in docstrings in Elisp code, it is not needed in docstrings in C code, since C function definitiions do not start with a parenthesis. The backslashes made the docstrings a bit harder to read and to format in columns. Also, some C docstrings had ( in column 1 and this did not appear to be causing any problems. So, simplify C docstrings by replacing \( with ( and \) with ).

2015-01-05Compute C decls for DEFSYMs automaticallyPaul Eggert1-31/+8
Fixes Bug#15880. This patch also makes Q constants (e.g., Qnil) constant addresses from the C point of view. * make-docfile.c: Revamp to generate table of symbols, too. Include <stdbool.h>. (xstrdup): New function. (main): Don't process the same file twice. (SYMBOL): New constant in enum global_type. (struct symbol): Turn 'value' member into a union, either v.value for int or v.svalue for string. All uses changed. (add_global): New arg svalue, which overrides value, so that globals can have a string value. (close_emacs_global): New arg num_symbols; all uses changed. Output lispsym decl. (write_globals): Output symbol globals too. Output more ATTRIBUTE_CONST, now that Qnil etc. are C constants. Output defsym_name table. (scan_c_file): Move most of guts into ... (scan_c_stream): ... new function. Scan for DEFSYMs and record symbols found. Don't read past EOF if file doesn't end in newline. * alloc.c, bidi.c, buffer.c, bytecode.c, callint.c, casefiddle: * casetab.c, category.c, ccl.c, charset.c, chartab.c, cmds.c, coding.c: * composite.c, data.c, dbusbind.c, decompress.c, dired.c, dispnew.c: * doc.c, editfns.c, emacs.c, eval.c, fileio.c, fns.c, font.c, fontset.c: * frame.c, fringe.c, ftfont.c, ftxfont.c, gfilenotify.c, gnutls.c: * image.c, inotify.c, insdel.c, keyboard.c, keymap.c, lread.c: * macfont.m, macros.c, minibuf.c, nsfns.m, nsfont.m, nsimage.m: * nsmenu.m, nsselect.m, nsterm.m, print.c, process.c, profiler.c: * search.c, sound.c, syntax.c, term.c, terminal.c, textprop.c, undo.c: * window.c, xdisp.c, xfaces.c, xfns.c, xftfont.c, xmenu.c, xml.c: * xselect.c, xsettings.c, xterm.c: Remove Q vars that represent symbols (e.g., Qnil, Qt, Qemacs). These names are now defined automatically by make-docfile. * alloc.c (init_symbol): New function. (Fmake_symbol): Use it. (c_symbol_p): New function. (valid_lisp_object_p, purecopy): Use it. * alloc.c (marked_pinned_symbols): Use make_lisp_symbol instead of make_lisp_ptr. (garbage_collect_1): Mark lispsym symbols. (CHECK_ALLOCATED_AND_LIVE_SYMBOL): New macro. (mark_object): Use it. (sweep_symbols): Sweep lispsym symbols. (symbol_uses_obj): New function. (which_symbols): Use it. Work for lispsym symbols, too. (init_alloc_once): Initialize Vpurify_flag here; no need to wait, since Qt's address is already known now. All uses changed. * eval.c (run_hook): New function. Most uses of Frun_hooks changed to use it, so that they no longer need to take the address of a Lisp sym. (syms_of_eval): Don't use DEFSYM on Vrun_hooks, as it's a variable. * frame.c (syms_of_frame): Add defsyms for the frame_parms table. * keyboard.c (syms_of_keyboard): Don't DEFSYM Qmenu_bar here. DEFSYM Qdeactivate_mark before the corresponding var. * keymap.c (syms_of_keymap): Use DEFSYM for Qmenu_bar and Qmode_line instead of interning their symbols; this avoids duplicates. (LISP_INITIALLY, TAG_PTR) (DEFINE_LISP_SYMBOL_BEGIN, DEFINE_LISP_SYMBOL_END, XSYMBOL_INIT): New macros. (LISP_INITIALLY_ZERO): Use it. (enum symbol_interned, enum symbol_redirect, struct Lisp_Symbol) (EXFUN, DEFUN_ARGS_MANY, DEFUN_ARGS_UNEVALLED, DEFUN_ARGS_*): Move decls up, to avoid forward uses. Include globals.h earlier, too. (make_lisp_symbol): New function. (XSETSYMBOL): Use it. (DEFSYM): Now just a placeholder for make-docfile. * lread.c (DEFINE_SYMBOLS): Define, for globals.h. (intern_sym): New function, with body taken from old intern_driver. (intern_driver): Use it. Last arg is now Lisp integer, not ptrdiff_t. All uses changed. (define_symbol): New function. (init_obarray): Define the C symbols taken from lispsym. Use plain DEFSYM for Qt and Qnil. * syntax.c (init_syntax_once): No need to worry about Qchar_table_extra_slots.

* admin/merge-gnulib (GNULIB_MODULES): Add stpcpy. * lib/gnulib.mk, m4/gnulib-comp.m4: Regenerate. * lib/stpcpy.c, m4/stpcpy.m4: New files, from gnulib. * lib-src/ebrowse.c (sym_scope_1, operator_name, open_file): * lib-src/emacsclient.c (get_server_config, set_local_socket) (start_daemon_and_retry_set_socket): * lib-src/etags.c (main, C_entries, relative_filename): * lib-src/pop.c (sendline): * lib-src/update-game-score.c (main): * lwlib/xlwmenu.c (resource_widget_value): * src/callproc.c (child_setup): * src/dbusbind.c (xd_signature_cat): * src/doc.c (get_doc_string, Fsnarf_documentation): * src/editfns.c (Fuser_full_name): * src/frame.c (xrdb_get_resource): * src/gtkutil.c (xg_get_file_with_chooser): * src/tparam.c (tparam1): * src/xfns.c (xic_create_fontsetname): * src/xrdb.c (gethomedir, get_user_db, get_environ_db): * src/xsmfns.c (smc_save_yourself_CB): Rewrite to avoid the need for strcat, typically by using stpcpy and/or lispstpcpy. strcat tends to be part of O(N**2) algorithms. * src/doc.c (sibling_etc): * src/xrdb.c (xdefaults): Now a top-level static constant.
2014-10-11Fix putenv race conditions with undefined behavior.Paul Eggert1-3/+8
Do all putenv calls before Emacs creates any threads. Use a safer way to modify the TZ environment variable in the presence of multiple threads. For further thread-safety, prefer localtime_r and gmtime_r to localtime and gmtime, and prefer struct tm's tm_gmtoff (if available) to calling both localtime_r and gmtime_r. * configure.ac (LOCALTIME_CACHE): Remove. We needn't worry about SunOS 4 any more; Sun dropped support in 2003. All uses of LOCALTIME_CACHE removed. This simplifies the fix. (tzalloc): Add check for this function. * admin/merge-gnulib (GNULIB_MODULES): Add time_r, since Emacs now calls localtime_r and gmtime_r directly. * src/dbusbind.c (Fdbus__init_bus): Move xputenv call from here ... (init_dbusbind): ... to this new function. * src/emacs.c (main) [HAVE_DBUS]: Call it before creating threads. * src/xterm.c (x_term_init): Move xputenv call from here ... (init_xterm): ... to this new function. * src/emacs.c (main) [USE_GTK]: Call it before creating threads. * src/editfns.c (HAVE_TM_GMTOFF): Default to false. (dump_tz_string): New constant. (init_editfns): Use it. This centralizes the dump_tz stuff. Call set_time_zone_rule here, so that its xputenv is done before Emacs goes multithreaded. (mktime_z) [!HAVE_TZALLOC]: New function, which is typically thread-safe enough for Emacs. (format_time_string, Fdecode_time, Fcurrent_time_string) (Fcurrent_time_zone): Prefer localtime_r and gmtime_r, which are more thread-safe, to localtime and gmtime. Remove now-unnecessary calls to block_input. (tm_gmtoff): New static function. (Fdecode_time, Fcurrent_time_zone): Use it. (Fencode_time): Use mktime_z, for better thread-safety. (set_time_zone_rule): Now static. Rewrite to be mostly thread-safe, i.e., not quite thread-safe but good enough for Emacs typical usage. Do not reclaim storage that is in the environment; let it leak. Always call tzset, since localtime_r does not. * src/emacs.c (dump_tz, Fdump_emacs) [HAVE_TZSET]: Remove dump_tz stuff. This is now done in init_editfns. * src/systime.h (mktime_z, timezone_t, tzalloc, tzfree) [!HAVE_TZALLOC]: New macros and declarations, for platforms lacking tzalloc & friends. Fixes: debbugs:8705
2014-09-23* lisp.h (lispstpcpy): Rename from lispstrcpy, and act like stpcpy.Paul Eggert1-1/+1
All callers changed. * xterm.c (x_term_init): Use new functionality to avoid two needs to compute a string length.
2014-09-23Use known length of a Lisp string to copy it faster.Dmitry Antipov1-1/+1
* lisp.h (lispstrcpy): New function. Add comment. * callproc.c (child_setup): * dbusbind.c (xd_append_arg): * doc.c (get_doc_string): * font.c (Ffont_xlfd_name): * frame.c (xrdb_get_resource): * process.c (Fmake_network_process, network_interface_info): * w32fns.c (Fx_open_connection): * w32proc.c (sys_spawnve): * xfns.c (select_visual): * xfont.c (xfont_list): * xsmfns.c (x_session_initialize): * xterm.c (x_term_init): Use it.
2014-05-20* dbusbind.c (xd_signature): Revert last 2 patches.Michael Albinus1-2/+2
2014-05-19Allow any non-nil value to count as true in bool-vector.Paul Eggert1-1/+2
Likewise for xd_signature in dbusbind.c. This is more consistent with the usual practice in Emacs, which is that any non-nil value counts as true. * doc/lispref/sequences.texi (Bool-Vectors): Coalesce discussion of how to print them. bool-vector's args need not be t or nil. * src/alloc.c (Fbool_vector): Don't require args to be t or nil. * src/dbusbind.c (xd_signature): Likewise, for booleans. * src/data.c, lisp.h (Qbooleanp): * src/lisp.h (CHECK_BOOLEAN): Remove. All uses removed.
