* New debugger-trap function to break to GDBJeremy Bryant2025-08-071-0/+5
| | | | | | | | | | * src/eval.c: new primitive debugger-trap * src/.gdbinit: set breakpoint to Fdebugger_trap * etc/DEBUG: document it. Remove suggestion to use Fredraw_display. This do-nothing primitive gives control to GDB, and for debugging convenience a breakpoint is set by default in .gdbinit.

* Remove low-level keyboard hook when attaching GDB to Emacs on WindowsEli Zaretskii2024-09-071-0/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | This fixes the problem whereby attaching GDB to a running Emacs on MS-Windows would slow down keyboard input, because the low-level keyboard hook installed by Emacs at startup was still installed, but with Emacs stopped, the hook code couldn't run, and therefore the OS would time-out waiting for the hook to return. Now when GDB is attached to Emacs, it will remove the hook right away. * src/.gdbinit: Call 'remove_w32_kbdhook' if the keyboard hook is already installed. * src/alloc.c (defined_WINDOWSNT): New enum. (gdb_make_enums_visible): Add 'defined_WINDOWSNT'.

* (COMPILED): Rename to CLOSUREStefan Monnier2024-04-281-5/+12
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | In preparation for the use of `PVEC_COMPILED` objects for interpreted functions, rename them to use a more neutral name. * src/lisp.h (enum pvec_type): Rename `PVEC_COMPILED` to `PVEC_CLOSURE`. (enum Lisp_Compiled): Use `CLOSURE_` prefix i.s.o `COMPILED_`. Also use `CODE` rather than `BYTECODE`. (CLOSUREP): Rename from `COMPILEDP`. (enum Lisp_Closure): Rename from `Lisp_Compiled`. * src/alloc.c, src/bytecode.c, src/comp.c, src/data.c, src/eval.c, * src/fns.c, src/lisp.h, src/lread.c, src/pdumper.c, src/print.c, * src/profiler.c: Rename all uses accordingly. * src/.gdbinit (xclosure): Rename from `xcompiled`. (xcompiled): New obsolete alias. (xpr): Adjust accordingly. Also adjust to new PVEC_CLOSURE tag name.

This is taken over from the previous git branch scratch/accurate-warning-pos which was abandoned for being too slow. The main difference in the current branch is that the symbol `nil' is never given a position, thus speeding up NILP markedly. * lisp/emacs-lisp/byte-opt.el (byte-compile-inline-expand) (byte-optimize-form-code-walker, byte-optimize-let-form, byte-optimize-while) (byte-optimize-apply): Use byte-compile-warn-x in place of byte-compile-warn. * lisp/emacs-lisp/bytecomp.el (byte-compile--form-stack): New variable. (byte-compile-strip-s-p-1, byte-compile-strip-symbol-positions): New functions. (byte-compile-recurse-toplevel, byte-compile-initial-macro-environment) (byte-compile-preprocess, byte-compile-macroexpand-declare-function): Bind print-symbols-bare to non-nil. (byte-compile--first-symbol, byte-compile--warning-source-offset): New functions. (byte-compile-warning-prefix): Modify to output two sets of position information, the old (incorrect) set and the new set. (byte-compile-warn): Strip positions from symbols before outputting. (byte-compile-warn-x): New function which outputs a correct position supplied in an argument. (byte-compile-warn-obsolete, byte-compile-emit-callargs-warn) (byte-compile-format-warn, byte-compile-nogroup-warn) (byte-compile-arglist-warn, byte-compile-docstring-length-warn) (byte-compile-warn-about-unresolved-functions, byte-compile-file) (byte-compile--check-prefixed-var, byte-compile--declare-var) (byte-compile-file-form-defvar-function, byte-compile-file-form-defmumble) (byte-compile-check-lambda-list, byte-compile--warn-lexical-dynamic) (byte-compile-lambda, byte-compile-form, byte-compile-normal-call) (byte-compile-check-variable, byte-compile-free-vars-warn) (byte-compile-subr-wrong-args, byte-compile-fset, byte-compile-set-default) (byte-compile-condition-case, byte-compile-save-excursion) (byte-compile-defvar, byte-compile-autoload) (byte-compile-make-variable-buffer-local, byte-compile-define-symbol-prop) (byte-compile-define-keymap): Replace byte-compile-warn with byte-compile-warn-x. (byte-compile-file, compile-defun): Bind symbols-with-pos-enabled to non-nil. (compile-defun, byte-compile-from-buffer): Use `read-positioning-symbols' rather than plain `read'. * | Reimplement Lisp_Object as pointer-to-incompletePaul Eggert2017-12-121-5/+11
|/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This makes Lisp_Object values opaque pointers instead of integers, which helps avoid the same sort of typos that CHECK_LISP_OBJECT_TYPE helps to avoid, without having to wrap pointers inside structures. This also looks forward to supporting -fcheck-pointer-bounds. * etc/DEBUG: * src/.gdbinit (Lisp_Object_Printer.to_string): Lisp_Object can be a pointer type now. * src/alloc.c (macro_XPNTR, XPNTR): * src/emacs-module.c (value_to_lisp_bits, lisp_to_value_bits): * src/lisp.h (lisp_h_XLI, lisp_h_XIL): (lisp_h_XUNTAG) [USE_LSB_TAG]: (XUNTAG) [!USE_LSB_TAG]: (Lisp_Object, TAG_PTR, make_lisp_symbol): Support new Lisp_Object implementation as a pointer to an incomplete type. Keep pointers pointers, as much as possible. * src/alloc.c (macro_XPNTR_OR_SYMBOL_OFFSET, XPNTR_OR_SYMBOL_OFFSET): Remove. All uses replaced by plain XPNTR. * src/emacs-module.c: Work around GCC bug 83162. * src/lisp.h (LISP_WORDS_ARE_POINTERS, lisp_h_XLP, lisp_h_XPL): (XLP, XPL) [DEFINE_KEY_OPS_AS_MACROS]: New macros. (Lisp_Word, untagged_ptr, Lisp_Word_tag): New types. (XLP, XPL): New inline functions. (TAG_PTR): Now expands to an initializer, not an expression. All uses changed. (TAG_SYMOFFSET, XLI_BUILTIN_LISPSYM): Remove. All uses removed. (LISPSYM_INITIALLY): Redo in terms of the new TAG_PTR. (NIL_IS_ZERO): Redo without XLI_BUILTIN_LISPSYM. * src/xwidget.c (webkit_javascript_finished_cb): Use XPL instead of XIL with a non-EMACS_INT arg. (Fxwidget_webkit_execute_script): Use XLP instead of XLI followed by two conversions.
* More fixes in src/.gdbinitEli Zaretskii2017-11-171-10/+8
| | | | | | * src/.gdbinit (pwinx): Update to match 'struct window'. (pcursorx): Use "." instead of "->" because the argument is a struct, not a pointer.
* Fix .gdbinit following lisp.h changesEli Zaretskii2017-11-171-12/+12
| | | | | | * src/.gdbinit (xsymname, pwinx, pgx, xbuffer, xcar, xcdr, xlist) (xprintstr): Adapt to latest changes in Lisp object C structures. (Bug#29332)
* Prefer HTTPS to FTP and HTTP in documentationPaul Eggert2017-09-131-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | Most of this change is to boilerplate commentary such as license URLs. This change was prompted by ftp://ftp.gnu.org's going-away party, planned for November. Change these FTP URLs to https://ftp.gnu.org instead. Make similar changes for URLs to other organizations moving away from FTP. Also, change HTTP to HTTPS for URLs to gnu.org and fsf.org when this works, as this will further help defend against man-in-the-middle attacks (for this part I omitted the MS-DOS and MS-Windows sources and the test tarballs to keep the workload down). HTTPS is not fully working to lists.gnu.org so I left those URLs alone for now.
* Don’t assume -g3 in .gdbinitPaul Eggert2017-08-281-2/+15
| | | | | * src/.gdbinit (EMACS_INT_WIDTH, USE_LSB_TAG): Use reasonable defaults if not in the symbol table.
* Improve .gdbinit Lisp value pretty-printingPaul Eggert2017-05-291-6/+45
| | | | | | * src/.gdbinit (to_string): Use an unsigned representation for Lisp values, as requested by Eli Zaretskii (Bug#27098). Also, use "make_number(N)" for Lisp integers.
* Port .gdbinit to GDB 7.11.1 + Python 2.7.12Paul Eggert2017-05-061-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | * src/.gdbinit (Lisp_Object_Printer.to_string): Explicitly convert integer val to 'int', so that older GDBs do not complain about the conversion. * src/lisp.h (Lisp_Object) [CHECK_LISP_OBJECT_TYPE]: Give the struct a tag, so that older GDB pretty-printers have a tag to hang their hat on.
* Pretty-print const Lisp_Objects in .gdbinitPaul Eggert2017-05-061-1/+1
| | | | | | | | * src/.gdbinit (Emacs_Pretty_Printers.__call__): Compare unqualified type to Lisp_Object, to do the right thing when the expression has type ‘Lisp_Object const’. Problem reported by Eli Zaretskii in: http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/emacs-devel/2017-05/msg00138.html
* Pretty-print Lisp_Object values in GDBPaul Eggert2017-05-051-0/+57
| | | | | | | * src/.gdbinit: Add a pretty-printer for Lisp_Object values. Now, GDB displays them as "XIL(0xXXX)" rather than displaying them as "..." when CHECK_LISP_OBJECT_TYPE is in effect and as "DDDDD" otherwise.

* | Remove interpreter’s byte stackPaul Eggert2016-12-231-15/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This improves performance overall on my benchmark on x86-64, since the interpreted program-counter resides in a machine register rather than in RAM. * etc/DEBUG, src/.gdbinit: Remove xbytecode GDB command, as there is no longer a byte stack to decode. * src/bytecode.c (struct byte_stack, byte_stack_list) (relocate_byte_stack): Remove. All uses removed. (FETCH): Simplify now that pc is now local (typically, in a register) and no longer needs to be relocated. (CHECK_RANGE): Remove. All uses now done inline, in a different way. (BYTE_CODE_QUIT): Remove; now done by op_relative_branch. (exec_byte_code): Allocate a copy of the function’s bytecode, so that there is no problem if GC moves it. * src/lisp.h (struct handler): Remove byte_stack member. All uses removed. * src/thread.c (unmark_threads): Remove. All uses removed. * src/thread.h (struct thread_state): Remove m_byte_stack_list member. All uses removed. m_stack_bottom is now the first non-Lisp field.
